For the sake of your survival,build a shelter!Some shelters are best for singleplayer,and others are multiplayer geared.If you want you can simply make many of these (see my cities page), or you can build them bigger.

Ender Home:a smallish home that is newbie friendly,  safe,and easy to expand.Good for singleplayer due to the lack of bunk-mate room.

Windows,a crafting table, and finished floor are all good ideas.It takes 49 wood including the door, but not a crafting table. With it it takes 53 wood.

Double Ender: Two ender homes, one on top of the other.Good for really any game,because of the second floor.Don`t fall when you are doing the roof!

Again, it is a good idea to add a bed, chest,and cobblestone floor.

Fort End: a large cobblestone castle. It works well for an archer tower.If you are creating a civilization, you can add your symbol like I did.

Exterior: 

Ender town house: a basic double ender with a few twists. It is made with a balcony!
